Surely
there is not one verse in all this Psalm [119] (although there are many) wherein
there is not mention made of one of these words, namely, either the law of God,
or of his Commandments, Statutes, or Testimonies, or of his Voice, Judgements,
or Justice. These words are here so many
times repeated, as that there is not one verse, but that there is one or
sometimes two of them in it; as hereafter we shall see throughout the whole
Psalm.
Now,
let us come to this matter herein contained; “Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their
whole heart!” First, David declares …that
we have greatly profited in the law, when we shall acknowledge and confess what
affection and love God bears us and how we ought to assure ourselves of his
good will and fatherly love. And
afterward, he tells us to what end and purpose it is, that God grants unto us
such an assurance, because (says he), we should seek him. …As God …declares himself unto us by his
word; it is impossible but that we should stir up ourselves, and be moved to
give ourselves wholly unto him. And to
prove that this is true, behold the inestimable bounty and goodness declared
unto us in our God, what man is he that is so perverse and void of sense and
reason who will not be contented to place himself there, where he thinks his
whole blessedness and felicity consists…

Again,
assurance of salvation is the theme of this reading. Have you this assurance of God’s grace and
benevolence towards you? Have you sought Him with your whole heart?
